I have spent some time in a number of salons recently, and one thing I’ve noticed was that many therapists were not cleaning properly or efficiently. Simply by not cleaning efficiently I’ve seen therapists wasting precious time, energy and money.

When it comes to the beauty industry, a first impression is a lasting impression. When a client walks in to your salon they are looking to see a fresh, clean and hygienic environment. They don’t want to see the left over pubic hair from the client before them, a trolley setup covered in wax and a bin full of hairy strips! Nor do they want to feel their feet sticking to the floor as they make their way over to the bed!

You really only need to spend one minute between each client quickly tidying up. Wipe around the top of your wax heater and re-organise your trolley. Doing this will mean there’s nothing to do at the end of the day other than empty the bin. If it takes longer than a minute between each client, you’re probably making too much of a mess during the treatment and your technique is incorrect.

Here are my Top Cleaning Tips!

1 – Use the last strip from a treatment as your cleaning tool. Spray the wipe with Keep Calm and Waxxx Off After Waxing Oil or Clean and Glo Citrus Clean if necessary and use it to polish your waxing equipment.

2 – Hide your messy bin by folding up the head rest and placing it into the bin while pushing down the contents.

3 – Have ancillaries with trigger spray handles that can hang off the side of your trolley. This will give you more room for your wax pots and will avoid getting wax on them.

4 – Make sure you have a pot that is efficient, with interchangeable skirts for both hard and strip wax. I recommend having a pot where the wax jars are placed directly into the metal insert. You simply heat it up in the microwave and place it into the pot. There’s no mess, no fuss!

With the holiday season almost upon us, now is the time to streamline our salons and make sure we’re working efficiently.

Here are Lilliane Caron’s top tips for a busy waxxxing season!

1 – The set up

When it comes to your trolley, less is more! Waxing should be a quick and precise process. Wax dries atmospherically, this means you need to work quickly. Make sure your waxes are placed towards the front of your trolley; with all your pre and post products placed behind, or when possible hanging from the side. This allows fast and easy access to your waxes and if you happen to drip wax in the process you are not dripping it all over your other products and tools! This will save you plenty of time when it comes to clean up. Hanging all your ancillary bottles off the side of the trolley will not only making room for your wax pots, but it is also a great way to have quick and easy access to each product. Trigger sprays are a lot easier to work with. There is no need for cotton pads/tissues, you simply spray the intended area and rub in prior to or post the waxing treatment.

2 – Let there be light

Good lighting is extremely important, not just good lighting in the room but extra lighting to make sure you get all those sneaky little hairs! Trolleys with a magi lamp attached are great or even Magnifying glasses that have a light attached (like the eyelash technicians use) are also a perfect tool that won’t get in the way while you are doing the treatment. Simply shine the light over the area after you have finished waxing to check if any hairs have been missed. Make sure your trolley has wheels especially if you have one with a light, this way it can be moved easily around the room and accessible at all times. You would be amazed at the difference a good trolley with all the right features will make!

3 – Make your bed

If the room you are working in is purely for waxing – which is advisable, as this can be a sticky service, it is important waxing table is set up correctly! This is usually the first thing a customer will look at and it is important they feel like they are in a professional and clean environment. The best set up (which requires the least laundry and clean up!) is; the waxing table, covered by a large towel to provide comfort, then covered in industrial plastic, like a transparent table cloth. This way, the bed still looks comfortable and luxurious with the soft white towel; however the plastic cover saves the towels from getting stained by wax, and saves you from changing the towel after each client. If you do happen to drop wax, you simply pick up your citrus solvent and wipe the wax off using a wax strip. If you are looking for an alternative set up, bed roll is okay too, but can also be a bit difficult if the client rolls over and the bed roll goes with them! Perhaps, when performing facial treatments, put a fresh perforated piece of bedroll under the client’s head to protect the pillow. When performing a Brazilian or bikini treatment, place the perforated paper under the body, but not so it is covering the entire bed.

4 – Express Waxing

During the Christmas period, we need to get our clients in and out the door as quickly as possible, while still providing exceptional service and giving them an experience they want to repeat. Our clients are likely be strapped for time around this time of year and we can’t have them thinking they can’t fit in a wax because it will take too long! Express waxing is the best way to achieve the quickest results, keeping our customers happy and our business busy. This process requires two therapists working on the one client. For example; one therapist providing the facial waxing while the second therapist starts the legs or Brazilian. Other combinations include; facial waxing and pedicure/manicure, brow/lash tint and manicure, underarm waxing and leg waxing – The list is endless! Once the first therapist is finished, she simply leaves the room to leave the other therapist to finish up the treatment. Appointing just one therapist to the job of “express waxer” means they can float around the salon, potentially take walk in clients, and pop in and out of the treatment rooms assisting the other therapists if and when needed. As you can imagine, this routine is a life saver when it comes to getting customers in and out the door as quick as possible.

5 – Waxing efficiently

Using an inferior product or the wrong products will make the Christmas period a nightmare! I can’t stress this point enough. It is human nature to want to save a few dollars here and there; we are all guilty of looking for low prices. However, when it comes to waxing the saying “you get what you pay for” has never been more true! If your wooden spatulas are splitting, or your wax is going brittle and you’re leaving half of it behind on your customer’s bikini line – have you really saved anything? If anything you have probably lost a customer as well as a handful of people they know. Having high quality products is important; you also need to make sure you are not cutting corners when it comes to buying everything you need. I have experienced waxers who in the warmer weather stand beside their clients and wave their hands over the hard wax until it sets. I have three words for you, Quick Dry Mist. This product will be your new best friend especially during summer. You simply spray the mist over the wax and it sets instantly. Having the best products will ensure you and your clients walk out happy and you get the results desired without irritations, redness or an embarrassing waxing story!

6 – Toot your own horn

Tell your clients why you are the best. It’s often hard to talk about your own business, and what makes you so great. Generally we don’t want to be seen as “tooting our own horn” but talking about your products that make you the best is a completely different thing! Tell your customers what products you use and why you use them. Tell them why you picked that brand and what benefits they are getting buy choosing your service over another salon. This lets your customers know that you are open about what you are using, and that you have 100% faith in the quality of your products. Doing this, will go a long way in making sure your clients keep coming back. You don’t want them thinking they can get the exact same treatment anywhere else – because they can’t.

7 – Keep it Clean

Cut your cleaning time by working smarter not harder. Cleaning doesn’t have to be hard unless you make it hard. As I touched on earlier, it is the little things that make life easier for you in the long run; like the way you set up your trolley or the precautions you take with setting up your bed (see points 1 & 2). In addition to these, chose a cleaning product that works. I use a concentrated citrus cleaning product, which requires no elbow grease. You simply spray it on the wax which breaks down instantly making it easy to just wipe off! I always try to do a quick clean up in-between customers rather than staying behind after a long shift to clean when you have Christmas shopping to do! I always ensure my waxing rooms look magnificent and more importantly hygienic. The bin is to be placed out of client sight and the wax pot is to be shining and clean after each client, before the next client arrives. Cheap pots can be impossible to clean. Make sure you have a pot that is efficient, with interchangeable skirts for both hard and strip wax. I recommended having a pot where the wax jars are placed directly into the metal insert, this way there is no pouring of wax, and you’ll never have to clean another heater insert again. You simply heat it up in the microwave and place it into the pot. There’s no mess, no fuss!

8 – Cross selling

Having your legs waxed? What about we make those feet look beautiful to go with it? Just because someone has come in specifically for a wax doesn’t mean they would be against having their nails done – I definitely wouldn’t! If the client has booked in for over half an hour of waxing and you have a spare therapist, upsell a mani or a pedi that can be done from the waxing bed. This way the client is not sparing any extra time and you have just made another sale. Add an extra discount to multiple services i.e. if they have only booked for one area to be waxed, offer a further 15% off if they need another area done, this way the client feels like they are getting a great deal rather than just a regular special. Don’t forget to also upsell your treatment products. Retail an ingrown hair treatment range and try adding a product to the sale at the end of every treatment.

9 – Making time

The summer season and leading up to Christmas is a hectic time for everyone! People are preparing for holidays and events and there’s always extra skin on show! Make sure your salon trading hours are tailored to meet everyone’s needs. This way you accommodate your customers’ as well as having the opportunity for your business to make more money. Extend your hours between Christmas and New Year. It is very common for retail to have a slump in the first two weeks of January. For this reason, encourage customers to come back during the quiet period by offering them a rebooking discount for January.

10 – Silent Selling

Promotional material is an important seeling tool. You would be surprised at what manufactures’ and distributors can provide for you if you just ask! Promo material is made for the soul purpose of communicating information about a product or service in a quick and effective way. In a busy salon environment you don’t always have the time to tell each and every customer about a great new product, or what deals you have on each week. Utilise your manufactures; ask them for posters, brochures, online banners, t-shirts, product samples, window decals. Anything that is going to potentially do the selling for you is important – especially during the busy times of year.

11 – Christmas – we meet again

Christmas comes around in what seems like a blink of an eye. As much as this season is chaos in the salon industry it is also the best time of year to pick up some extra sales! Don’t forget to stock up on extra products to have around the salon. Having a gift packs available is quick and easy money. Make sure you keep these close to the counter and prompt your customers “Have you finished all your Christmas shopping, would you like to purchase a Christmas gift pack?” You would be surprised how effective this is. People often don’t think to do their Christmas shopping at their beauty salon so don’t forget to remind them that they can!

Caronlab Heater set up options

By Waxxxpress Founder, Lilliane Caron

Running any business small or large is Hard (yes it even comes with a capital H). Whatever the path that has led you to owning a beauty business, all can still have the same weaknesses, successful or not. I’ve had my own salon for over 20 years and I still make mistakes, none of us are perfect and if we were, we’d all be billionaires! I’ve learnt that a number of things can be addressed to ensure the factors that can be controlled are; and it all comes down to a bit of discipline. Some of these points might seem like I’m stating the obvious but sometimes we just need to remind ourselves of our priorities.

So here are my top 10 tips…

Seems pretty basic, but it’s a fact that many salons do little to no client follow up. Of course there’s a fine line between excellent customer service and harassing. But you know your clients best and where that line is for your business. Gather a good email database so you can keep in contact with your clients regularly. Social media is also a great tool and worth spending some time building it up. Set some goals for staff to mention things like “that great Facebook competition last month”, it’ll get the clients excited too.

It often amazes me how many therapists don’t work with anything other than talc and a citrus wax cleaner. Would you do a facial without cleansing the skin first? There are so many movements that must occur when performing other treatments but waxing seems to be lacking! Don’t waxing clients deserve to be pampered a little before and after their hairs and ripped from their body? Cleansing an area before waxing can be relaxing and using an after wax oil or lotion afterwards can be relaxing as well as soothing. Perform these treatments; it’s the little things that stick in clients minds. They expect you to wax them; they may not expect to leave feeling refreshed with a hint of mango aroma!

Where waxing is concerned there can be a lot of wastage. Teach your staff how to save money through correct waxing techniques and to reduce the over use of utensils like strips and hard wax. These by far are the biggest two wasted items I see. Hard wax applied far too thick and strips used once and thrown away is money in the bin!

By being ‘quick’ I don’t mean speed waxing. Speed waxing is a fad service and if done incorrectly can cause more harm than good! Express waxing using my “buddy system” means working smarter not harder without sacrificing results. This is great for busy seasons like Christmas and Easter.

Where possible, if two therapists can work on the one client at the same time this will mean more clients through the door. Also, it has been seen, that when therapists work together they become motivated and more team focused. It’s ideal to pair up a less experienced staff member with someone who has been around longer so they can share ideas and techniques at the same time. In addition to the above, the client can often feel quite special as they are given the royal treatment for the same price!

In this industry you have to be a master chameleon, forever changing your colours to suit the client. By doing so, you may hear little nuggets of information about your business and its perception from the outside world, a view to which you cannot see without their help. Picking up on these hints (or sometimes delivered more direct), compliments and/or criticisms will help you improve and grow. This also comes into play when in a treatment, never let a client leave unhappy. Actually check with them before your finish, you may not have done something they really wanted! Ensure all of their needs have been met to the best of your ability.

Retail sales can come from waxing services, not just facial or spa treatments. The most common ailment with waxing clientele is ingrown hairs. Ensure your staff has an appropriate range to refer the client to. If you’re nervous about retailing just try one product to begin with, this could be an ingrown hair treatment, an exfoliating mitt or even a pair of tweezers. Funnily enough, it’s a lot easier to sell a $20 ingrown hair treatment to six clients in a day than a $120 product to one client after a facial!

I can’t stress this point enough – I use the home brand kitchen paper towel as an example. If you buy the cheaper version and you have to use more of it compared to the more expensive one, have you really saved anything? Then only to have your staff waste it as well because they don’t care as it’s “just the cheap stuff” (refer to point 8)! Quality products made from quality ingredients will also result in better outcomes for your clients, especially with reduced irritations, redness and ingrown hairs. Your supplies should be the least of your worries. With all the other stresses of a business; you really don’t have time for your wax to be going brittle or your wooden spatulas to be splitting. Quite simple really.

Beauty therapy is not pretty. The washing of towels, scrubbing of floors and general cleaning is certainly not something they mention enough in beauty school. I’ve always ensured my waxing rooms look magnificent and hygienic. A wax pot is always to be shining and clean after each client, before the next one arrives. Ensure no wax residue remains anywhere but the wax pot, and the bin is to be out of client sight. I’ve seen salons with strings of strip wax all over pots, trolleys and floors. There’s nothing worse than a client getting home from a treatment with wax stuck to the bottom of their feet or shoes. Yes all very basic, but all too often forgotten!

Never think you or your staff know it all, especially with waxing! There are so many wonderful techniques, hints and tips you can gain from each other in a salon. Something that may seem so simple to one has never occurred to someone else. Spend time once a month with all your staff performing a treatment and see just what you can learn from each other. Look into specialized training in certain techniques such as Brazilian waxing. It can often take more formal classes for therapists to become comfortable in performing treatments like this. Investing in your staff is certainly worth every penny!

Never lose your focus and always be shifting your goals. You and your business need to evolve but don’t forget to involve your staff in this process. They need goals too, set them and watch them be achieved. Share the good times and the bad with your staff; this will make them want to work with you not just for you. All previous points to this one do in fact relate! If cleanliness is something you want to improve, make it so. This is your business so set clear achievable goals and be empowered!

Anyone who has ever shaved or waxed will no doubt be familiar with ingrown hairs and well aware of the pain, irritation and embarrassment they cause. As a therapist, I’ve seen many ingrown hairs and the most memorable ones are the ones that have been squeezed, picked, plucked, dug out and cut at by frustrated clients looking for a solution. More often than not, this leads to infection and potential scarring.

No one wants to have ingrown hairs! They’re unsightly, sometimes painful and itchy causing much discomfort, sometimes so bad that the client gives up on waxing altogether. Why put a client through of all of this when solutions exist?!?

I thought the best place to start this piece is to explain what an ingrown hair is and why they occur. To put it simply, an ingrown hair is a hair that does not emerge from the follicle but remains embedded in the skin, usually causing inflammation. Ingrown hairs can occur after hair removal when dead skin cells accumulate and form a papule as the skin heals. Hair growing in the area gets trapped under the papule and is prevented from exiting the skin, creating an ingrown hair. Irritating and unsightly ingrown hairs can occur on any part of the body however are most common under the arms, bikini line, legs, chest and on the face/neck for men. Ingrown hairs and other problems associated with hair removal vary from person to person and can be more prominent depending on hair and skin types.

I have the feeling most therapists are scared of offending or embarrassing clients when they have ingrown hairs and therefore the client is left to figure out this pesky problem on their own. The truth of it is that ingrown hairs are just as important to talk about with clients as any other skin concern. Clients come to us for a professional/expert service and I believe that it is just as important to ensure their skin is as smooth, as it is hair-free.

We always recommend treatments for common skin issues within a facial treatment; cleansers, toners or moisturizers, so why are we ignoring the obvious when it comes to other issues? From my experience, it comes down to the fear of pushing retail sales by the therapist – even though offering a solution to a common problem will make the client happier and more confident in your service.

When it comes to a waxing treatment, some therapists feel that clients don’t want to be asked about buying any further products; however I feel we are here to offer a complete service to our clients no matter what the salon treatment, and that includes suggesting a solution to the treatment and/or prevention of ingrown hairs. Plus, as a salon owner myself, I believe it’s always advantageous to an opportunity like this to cross-sell a complimentary product… more likely than not, you’ll make that sale and that in itself should be some motivation to suggest a product!

So, how do we overcome the hurdle of the awkward ingrown conversation? The first step is to ensure you retail some sort of ingrown hair treatment. When looking for a brand to stock ensure the product has excellent testimonials. Test it out on yourself and other therapists in the salon first. If your therapists have faith in a product it will make it easier for them to endorse and sell than something they’ve never used. It’s also a good idea to have some posters or information about the range you stock in the waiting area and treatment room. Why not look into some branded t-shirts or badges as part of your salon uniform? These sorts of items can help start the conversation and make clients feel more at ease about the topic.

PrintSecondly, when in a treatment, chat to your client. Sometimes it is easy to extract an ingrown hair safely. Talk through this process with them, explain what you are doing and perhaps inform them then of products you have available to prevent and treat them.

It’s not just women who are affected by ingrown hairs. Men are also extremely prone to ingrown hairs and shaving rash due to the coarseness of their hairs. There are products out there specifically suited to treating and preventing shaving rash on the face and neck which work amazingly well. Make sure you stock a range of products that can accommodate the needs of all of your clients.

I always make a point of talking about treatment and prevention products to my clients and often they come back thanking me for getting them onto a product that has relieved them from the ingrown hair battles! It’s this client appreciation that makes me think that there are so many more lives that could gain a little relief from us simply not being scared to approach the subject it with our clients!

Today is the day to remove the awkward mystery and start the conversation about ingrown hairs! It’s time to banish the bumps! You’ll be surprised by the results; change in attitudes and well, the client appreciation will speak for itself!

My top 5 tips for smooth skin!

1. Exfoliate daily! The removal of dead skin cells will aid the prevention of ingrown hairs as there will be less chance of the hair getting trapped under the skin.

2. Do not touch! If the hair cannot easily be lifted with a pair of clean tweezers (without breaking the skin), leave it alone!

3. Find the right product for your particular concern. Different products will give different results. If you’re a stickler for routine buy a product that will help in the prevention and elimination of ingrown hairs. If you’re someone who forgets to use a product daily, go for a treatment only product designed to be used once an ingrown appears. Go for products in packaging that suit the area being treated. Eg) if the ingrown hairs are on a small area of the body, a spot treatment is best. If it’s a large area like arms, legs, chest or back, a lotion, spray or serum is far better and more economical.

4. Don’t be fooled by price. The most expensive treatments for ingrown hairs are not always the best (or at least any better). Always look for product reviews and testimonials and if possible ask for a sample first.

5. Other ailments! If you’re also suffering from other bumps, pustules and pimples a lot of ingrown hair treatments will often aid these concerns too. There are even some treatments out there that retard hair growth and there’s even some which ease the discomfort of waxing! Multi-purpose all-rounders, a must for any bathroom cabinet!

The answers are within, writes Lilliane Caron.

Waxing is a salon’s bread and butter. As a highly conducted treatment, perhaps we need to consider what makes each wax different when selecting what we put in our wax pot.

As beauty students we move into the salon environment continuing to use the wax we were taught with, like some sort of heirloom. This is partly due to our experience when we first go into a beauty wholesale store. We are given a huge variety of options but little opportunity to try or learn about the products so we just go with what is familiar.

We put a massive amount of research into the skincare brands we use and sell but give far less attention to the product that makes our salons able to run day to day.

At school we are taught how to apply wax but not the difference between them in order to make an informed choice. With such a broad range of clients these days, there has never been a higher need to be proficient with a spatula using both strip and hard waxes. Fears associated with the use of hard wax still exist today. However, technology teaches us that with a little product research, there’s no need to fear.

To make a truly informed choice, we need to look at the core ingredient in wax — resin. This ingredient is the base of all strip and hard waxes and generally the first ingredient you will see on a label. Over the years, the resins used in professional waxes and the processes to manufacture them have become more refined. To make it easy, there are two real categories we can put resins into, those derived from the sap of trees (generally pine or fir trees) and those that are synthetic (man-made).

Usually we are told “natural” is better but when it comes to pine (tree) resin in waxes, unrefined resins can cause allergic reactions and product instability. Tree resins are generally referred to as Colophonium, or Rosin, on the ingredient listing, but unfortunately you are not going to know if it is good quality until you open the jar. Resins are cheaper to buy if they have strong smells or dark colours and the parts of the resin that cause this also generally cause a negative reaction in the client. If the wax has a strong acid/chemical smell or a very dark brown, dirty colour then it will also probably be very cheap to buy and be more likely to cause a negative reaction. If you are trying a new wax, alarm bells should ring if clients are breaking out with itchy, red skin after or during a treatment. Hard waxes will become brittle and snap off which can lead to hair breakage and bruising of the skin if they are made from inferior grade resins.

In saying this, there are pine resin waxes that have been somewhat refined to help avoid causing the contraindications listed above. These waxes are generally mid-price range and, although not the pinnacle, will do the job well enough without causing harm to the client. Top of the range synthetic resins are much safer, more consistent in production batch to batch and easier for the therapist to work with. Synthetic resins are usually declared as hydrocarbon resin or polycyclopentadiene. As with tree resins, synthetic resins can be purchased in lower grades with similar issues. High quality synthetic resins are easy to colour and fragrance and often appear fresh and clean. Pure white waxes can only be made from the best synthetic resins available. They provide the manufacturer with better quality control over the product and in turn give the therapist confidence in the treatment being performed.

Secondly, we need to look at the pricing and market place. Do your research; look for trusted brands and names. Get samples where you can and ask fellow therapists, speak to manufacturers and suppliers for advice. If you’re a salon owner and your staff complains about the wax, perhaps listen to their concerns. If they aren’t happy with the wax, no doubt the client feels the same way. Don’t assume there’s not something better or different out there in the market place.

A good-quality hard wax can be as much as $35.00 per kilogram, which sounds expensive. But remember that to wax a client’s eyebrows (pair) you use about 15 grams of wax which equates to 52 cents for the treatment. It really can be worth the extra to have a happy, satisfied client who keeps coming back.

The reputation of your business can be on the line if you’re using inferior waxes. Client loyalty and trust are paramount to your business surviving. Using high quality, innovative products along with exceptional service will ensure repeat business. We are creatures of habit; clients will expect the same treatment and the same result every time. If your wax is pliable, consistent, nourishing on the skin, has a subtle aroma and, of course, is removing hair properly, there’s no need to change! If not, it’s time to look for one that does.

It’s fair to say the evolution of hard waxes particularly, has come a very long way in recent years. The rise in Brazilian waxing has certainly driven manufactures to keep pushing the envelope, developing formulas to provide superior results for both client and therapist. Technology has meant that hard waxes are rarely seen in foil trays any more removing the need for the hammer. We can now even microwave hard and strip waxes or scoop hard wax in a powdered form straight into the wax pot to watch it melt in seconds!

If you think you would benefit from a different wax, talk to the manufacturers. They provide the best source of information, are aware of the latest technology and will be happy to help you find a stockist nearby. They can provide product samples and offer training and education to aid in furthering your knowledge about not only wax but also waxing techniques.

Australia produces extremely high quality and revolutionary waxes which are in high demand the world over. Buying Australian-made is certainly a step in the right direction for you, your business and most importantly, your clients.
